In OffiByte, your practice is structured around Organizations and Tenants. Understanding this hierarchy is essential for effective use of the platform.

Organizations

An Organization represents your law firm, legal department, or practice entity. It's the top-level container for all your data.

Each organization has:

  • A unique Organization Number (e.g., A0001)
  • A Name and contact details
  • Its own set of matter types, statuses, and categories
  • Separate users, roles, and permissions
  • Independent financial records and billing

Tenants (Offices/Branches)

Within each organization, you can have multiple Tenants. A tenant typically represents:

  • A branch office in a different city
  • A department within a larger legal team
  • A practice area that needs data isolation

Why Tenants Matter

All data is scoped to the active tenant. This means:

  • Matters, contacts, events, and ledger entries are scoped to the active tenant
  • Switching tenants shows you a completely different set of data
  • Users can be assigned to one or more tenants

User Organization Mapping

A user can belong to multiple organizations and multiple tenants within each organization. Each mapping includes:

  • The user's role in that organization
  • A contact record linked to the user (which can differ per organization)
  • The tenants they can access
